CAMBRIDGE RULES 1848 FOOTBALL MEMORIAL – PARKERS PIECE, CAMBRIDGE

Hibbitt Masonry was asked to fix a commissioned stone Football Memorial “Cambridge Rules 1848” to be placed onto Parkers Piece in Cambridge.

The 4 large pieces of Grey Granite were designed by Artists Neville Gabie and Alan Ward who was commissioned by the Cambridge Arts Steering Group on behalf of Cambridge City Council to create a work marking the location of The Cambridge Rules. 
The Granite blocks were transported to our yard in Victoria Road where we stored them until the agreed fixing date.

Due to the location of the memorial, we had to ensure that the site area was secure and safe from the general public.  We also had to work to a strict time frame so that the memorial could be unveiled at the public ceremony on the 12th May.

The public art commission from Cambridge City Council celebrates the football rules written down by Cambridge students 170 years ago that have gone on to shape the modern game.
One single large stone was cut into nine equal pieces. Each cut face engraved with the laws of the game in numerous languages and fonts. Once cut and engraved, four pieces will remain as a permanent marker on Parker’s Piece. The other five will be sent as ‘tokens of exchange’ to five countries all over the globe, ‘twinning’ Cambridge with the world. The location of each stone is determined by a story which echoes how football spread and how it has grown to encompass race, nation, class, and gender. The commission team is working with Street Child United who are helping to facilitate the placement of the stones in locations with both historical and contemporary football stories.
