WYMONDHAM ABBEY EXTENSION – ABBEY EXPERIENCE PROJECT

WYMONDHAM ABBEY EXTENSION – ABBEY EXPERIENCE PROJECT

Hibbitt Masonry were delighted to work on this award winning project with the Main Contractor Draper Nichols Ltd.

Clipsham Limestone was used for the new walls and shaped around some of the original flint ruin walls.
After building sample walls with different finishes it was decided by the Architects Freeland Rees Roberts
that the plinth stones be finished with a heavily tooled finish and the ashlar be left roughly honed.
All of the stonework was fixed with 10mm joints and pointed with lime mortars finished to show the carefully
chosen aggregates within.

We designed and installed a new rampant twisted disabled access ramp in Ancaster Weatherbed Limestone
this was laid on an impervious membrane and steel work to keep the invasion on the existing fabric to an absolute minimum.

The project also involved some interesting challenges regarding the conservation of the existing fabric and
uncovered some medieval incised drawings which now form part of the display now on show in one of the new spaces within the Abbey.
